스칸디나비아의 국교(國敎)인 [자유주의 교회]의 목사이자 작가이고 국회의원이기도했던 칼
보버그(Carl Boberg, 1859∼1940)가 1886년에 작시한 '오, 위대하신 하느님(O Store
God)'의 스웨덴 원문을 존슨(Gustav Johnson)이 번역하여 1931년부터 미국의 자유주의 교
회가 사용하기 시작한 것이 이 찬송가의 첫 출현이었다.
그런데, 이 찬송가는 웬일인지 작사자의 고국인 스웨덴에서는 별로 불려지지 않고 오히려
외국에서 더 애창되었는데 러시아에서도 1927년에 그들의 언어로 번역되어 사랑 받고 있었
다. 이 무렵 러시아에 파송되어 있던 영국인 선교사 하인 목사(Stuart K. Hine)가 이 찬송
에서 깊은 감동을 받고 How Great Thou Art라는 영어로 번역하여 1949년, 그가 발행하던
러시아어로 된 [복음지]에 실었다. 그리고, 1954년, 빌리 그래험이 영국에 왔을 때 이 찬송
이 불려졌다. 이후, 그래험은 가는 곳마다 이 성가를 채택하여 드디어 20세기에 가장 인기
있는 찬송가로 자리를 잡게 되었다.
곡조는 옛 스웨덴의 민요였는데 이것을 토대로 에드그렌(Erik Adolf Edgren)이 편곡하였다.
물론 우리나라에서도 이 성가는 가장 널리 애창되는 몇 곡 가운데 하나이다.
